All about Communication
Puseletso Mompei is the Director of Kwazi Communications, a Johannesburg based Company which provides training on Public Speaking, Media Relations for non media managers, Media Interview Skills and Business Communication.
Puseletso studied for her BA in Communications and Political Science, at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and says, “It was great studying Communications at a time when ‘New Media’ was all the rage. We attended lectures and speaking events to hear discussions about how multimedia platforms and the Internet would change the world forever.”
Over the years, she has garnered hands-on experience at organizations such as the Africa-America Institute, Botswana Television, Population Services International (PSI), Soul City Institute for Health and Development, International Organizations for Migration (IOM) and while working for Dream catcher Multimedia, did Public Relations for big clients such as the City of Jo’burg’s Arts Alive, Channel O and the MTN South Africa Music Awards. As a child she had always been attracted to the developmental sector, and achieved her childhood dream of working as International Media Relations Officer for the United Nations, stationed in Liberia.
In 2007, Puseletso felt ready to chart her own course by opening the doors to her own business, and Kwazi Communications came into existence. In its first year of operation, the company landed work with businesses such as Tribute Magazine and African Fashion International. “Exposure to the world of fashion, business and lifestyle was exciting and very good exposure for me.” says Puseletso.
Since inception, the company has serviced a wide range of clientele, from security companies, to start up IT outfits, established publications, as well as players in the business and tourism sector.
Kwazi Communications was initially set up to provide freelance writing and editorial services, however the company’s portfolio of services has since grown to include Media Relations and Communications Skills training which more fully utilize the totality of Puseletso’s skills set.
She explains, “Most individuals and companies are aware of the importance of increasing their public profile, but often feel out of their depth when they have to make public or media appearances. I see my role as helping clients to be better public speakers so that in addition to technical know how and aptitude, they have the confidence to share what they are doing, why and how.”
Her varied Media and Communications Roles, as well as formal training to train others, have lent her the hands on experience required for training, guiding and coaching others.
Speaking on the future, she says “Cameras and microphones are switching their focus on emerging economies of Africa. We can push our influence through platforms such as conferences and summits, as well as the internet, global TV networks and publication, and satellite radio. However, it is important to note that communicating with broad audiences is a skill, not an art.”
